2000 Before You Begin:
IMPORTANT! “Write-Behind Caching ”, a feature in Microsoft Windows
will cause damage to your data file if it is enabled when you use
LabNet. Before using LabNet, be sure that you complete these steps on
ALL computers on the network.
Before you can disable write-behind caching
Microsoft has confirmed write caching settings for hard disk
will not persist after you restart your computer in the following
Microsoft Products:
Microsoft Windows 2000, Professional
Microsoft Windows 2000, Server
Microsoft Windows 2000, Advanced Server
The following link describes the symptoms, cause, resolution, etc.
To disable write behind caching you MUST first install
Microsoft's Service Pack 3. Please follow these directions:
To find out if Service Pack 3 is installed on each of your
Windows 2000 computers:
- On your desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, and then
click Properties.
- Click the General tab, and then click Device Manager .
- In the "System" section you will read 'Microsoft Windows 2000,
5.00.XXXX'. If Service Pack 3 is installed, the next line will
display 'Service Pack 3'; if it is not displayed, you must obtain
and install Service Pack 3.
Download and install Service Pack 3, if required:
Disable "write-behind caching" “Write-Behind Caching ”,
a feature in Microsoft Windows will cause damage to your data file
if it is enabled when you use LabNet. Before using LabNet, be sure
that “Write-Behind Caching” is disabled on ALL computers on the
network.
To disable “Write-Behind Caching” For Windows 2000 Professional,
Windows 2000 Server, and Windows 2000 Advanced Server, follow these
steps:
- Double click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. The
following menu (displayed on the right) should appear.
- When the menu appears, right-click on your local hard drive,
(Usually listed as "C:") and select "Properties".
- Click on the "Hardware" tab to bring the Hardware window
forward.
- Highlight your Hard Drive and click on the "Properties"
button.
- Click the "Disk Properties" tab to bring the Disk Properties
options forward.
- Disable write-behind caching by removing the check mark in the
box next to the statement "Write-cache enabled" and click "OK".
- Be sure to disable write-behind caching on all drives that
LabNet uses.
- Repeat these steps for ALL Windows 2000 machines on your
network.
